GREATER BOSTON MASONRY

Tuckpointing & Repointing

Small joints have a big job. Renewing them thoughtfully helps preserve the masonry around them.

THOUGHTFUL WORK, FROM THE START

Preserve the brick. Respect the original.

Repointing removes deteriorated mortar from joints and replaces it with a compatible mortar. The depth, preparation, mix, and finish should suit the existing masonry, particularly on older buildings.

Tuckpointing is sometimes used as a general term for joint repair, but it can also describe a decorative technique that creates a fine contrasting line. A clear scope should identify the actual treatment, the proposed mortar, and the areas to be addressed.

A detail worth considering

Older, softer brick can be damaged by an unsuitable hard mortar. Matching the properties of the existing wall matters as much as matching its color.

A few useful answers.

How do I know if mortar needs attention?

Missing, crumbling, deeply recessed, or visibly open joints are reasons to arrange an assessment. Moisture staining can also warrant investigation, though it does not identify the source on its own.

Does the whole wall need repointing?

Not necessarily. Selective work may be appropriate when deterioration is localized. The estimate should explain which areas need attention and why.
